Hello all,
It is very nice reading all you guys stories on here and seeing that so many people are still enjoying their DuFour 27 so much. I have sailed my whole life on the 'family' DuFour 27, which was first owned by my grandparents and after they decided their sailing days were over I took the helm. This has already been about 15 years ago. In that time I have done many wonderful trips around the lakes in The Netherlands. Now I am looking to expend our sailing range a bit further and that is where my questions come from. I still have the first engine (Volvo Penta MD6a - 10 HP) installed in the boat, which has given me no trouble what so ever and has always performed the duty it was asked to do. With us looking to travel into tidal areas it would be good to have an engine that could propel us a bit faster then the current engine does, because we will not get to hull speed at all and I don't remember every being able too.
My question is what is the maximum horse power that would be allowed to be fitted in a DuFour 27 and which things should I look at when doing so (prop choice, engines that would fit, ratio?). I have looked around and it seems that ~20 HP diesel engines are far lighter and smaller then the current unit that is installed. I am wondering if this would be too much horsepower for the structural integrity of the boat to be compromised?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
thanks Jacob
